Break Bread

Sharing a meal opens a window to connection. It's a powerful way to hear someone’s story and celebrate our differences.

Since early 2024, Stand Up has been inviting the Australian Jewish community to host Break Bread gatherings, opening their tables to anyone interested in experiencing Jewish culture.

We hope that by starting in the Jewish community, we inspire others to share their own cultural traditions, creating a wave of connection and understanding. This is a chance to share Jewish traditions, enjoy some tasty food, and appreciate the values that bond us all.

Invite someone new to your table. Share over Shabbat, connect over challah, bond over brisket.

When we break bread together, we see that our differences make life richer. We can challenge stereotypes, build understanding, and create a more compassionate world.

Get involved

Break Bread is meant to be easy. Just think about who in your network might be interested in experiencing Jewish culture or sharing their own. It can be as easy as adding a few extra places at your Shabbat or chag (festival) table. You decide the format and whom you’d like to invite.

You might host a Shabbat meal, a challah bake, or a cultural exchange potluck. Stand Up provides a short guide to help you plan and run your gathering.

Break Bread is apolitical — it’s a relaxed and welcoming way to ask questions, learn, and connect.

A growing movement

In just our first year, over 800 people from both the Jewish and wider community have taken part representing diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Participants have included politicians, community leaders, school groups, and creatives—each eager to share and learn from one another.

Join in and be part of this powerful movement. Share a meal, share your story and help build bridges across communities. Whether you host, attend, or support, your involvement makes a difference.
