Shaniah grew up in Toomelah, a remote and disadvantaged Indigenous community with very high unemployment rates and limited opportunities for youth.
We first met Shaniah when she was 8 years old during Stand Up’s regular holiday camps for Indigenous youth. Later she took part in our leadership and self-development program called Camp Connections. Over the last 5 years, her Stand Up mentors have encouraged her to complete her schooling, set career goals and arranged work experience placements for her in Sydney. Shaniah is now 20 and proud to be the first person in her family to go to university. She is studying a Bachelor of Health Science, specialising in mental health, and plans to return to Toomelah to use her skills and knowledge to strengthen her community.
